From the Executive Director: Leah Goss
As the new executive director for Hide In Plain Sight, it’s been exciting to hear from our scholars about their graduations! We are thrilled to receive commencement announcements and photos in the mail and in email. We’ve included a few for you in this newsletter.
In my new role, I’ve been meeting with K-12 officials about our scholarship program and learning more about the students who are deemed homeless. While enrolled in public school, these students receive special guidance and other services, but once they graduate, they fall off the radar, and there is no one to help them transition to college or employment.
That’s where a Hide In Plain Sight scholarship can make all the difference, intervening at that critical moment. We invest in these aspiring young people, empowering them to believe in themselves and to persist in achieving their goals.
We are making changes to our scholarship program to improve our ability to identify these students in time to change the trajectory of their lives. For example, in the past, students were required to apply for our scholarship every semester while attending college.
Now, we will open our application in June, award by late August, and commit to supporting our scholars until they graduate. Bringing certainty to their situation, which was the main thing they lacked, will make a huge difference in their ability to succeed.
Stay tuned for more updates as Hide In Plain Sight refines our processes and grows our capacity to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty through education. Thank you for your support!
